How come Dodgers got tagged out twice at home plate (Kent and Drew) in NL division series game 1?

What's wrong with their silly base running?

How come Dodgers got tagged out twice at home plate (Kent and Drew) in NL division series game 1?
Here's what really happened:





"I was watching the play [at the plate] all the way," Donnelly said. "In fact, when J.D. ran by me, I was shocked."





When Martin directed John Maine's delivery toward right field, Donnelly and Drew seemed to know it was going to fall before Kent, who was leaning toward second base. When the ball hit the wall and bounced directly to Mets right fielder Shawn Green, Kent yelled, "Let's go, let's go."





Unfortunately, the much faster Drew was already coming and coming hard. As Green made a perfect throw toward second baseman Jose Valentin, Donnelly wanted to put up the stop sign for Kent.





But with Drew charging right behind, Donnelly felt he had to send Kent, but just as he started to do this, he looked up and saw Drew was just a few steps away from third base.





"If I hold [Kent], I've got two of them at third," Donnelly said. "So I said, 'Send [Kent], one's going to be out, and [Drew's] going to be at third.' That was my thought process in a split second."





After waving Kent home, Donnelly turned toward the plate, expecting to see one out recorded. He then saw Drew breeze by and knew that potential disaster loomed.





Never did Donnelly provide the stop sign to Drew, who says he would have definitely been able to stop at third base.





"I thought Jeff was scoring standing up. I couldn't see what the ball did in the corner," Drew said. "Once I rounded second, my whole thing is to pick up Rich, and he was waving us home. So, I thought the play was on me."





Unfortunately for the Dodgers, all of the jokes created from this one will forever be on them. Just when they thought they were in the midst of the big inning that would have felled Maine, they encountered disaster and now found themselves needing to win three of the next four games to win the series.








Man, I was yelling like crazy in my living room yesterday. I couldn't believe that they would make such a big mistake.

1. A bad jump by Kent


2. Excellent pick up and relay by Green to Valentin to Lo Duca


3. Either a bad call by the third base coach to send Drew home or Drew just kept running no matter what.


4. Lo Duca being heads up to tag Drew as well, 2 seconds after the tag on Kent.





Championships can be won or lost on something like that play.
Reply:actually the ball took a fast bounce back to shawn green, and a good relay happened. the first runner was sent, and it was close, the second runner starting to run through the sign as he saw the coach waving "him" on. when the coach saw him, he tryed to stop him, and it only slowed the second runner down a little bit. he couldnt stop in time and continued running. still not as cool as when i think the brooklyn dodgers ended up with 3 guys on third base in a game back in the day lol
Reply:I saw the replay %26amp; i was so damn pissed. . .Drew should've stopped @ 3rd base! But I applaud their aggresiveness, they just need to know when to slow down a bit!! coming from a Dodger fan!!!!

Reply:Bad baserunning/Coaching. Drew should have never come home.
Reply:Kent was loafing around third, and then kicked into 'his' high gear when he realized there would be a play at the plate. Kent also should have realized Shawn Green wasn't going to catch that ball, and taken off early. So Kent was just bad base running, and Drew, well i think he would have been thrown out anyway...he should have stopped at 3rd base.

Seriously though, I'm a die hard Mets fan who left work early to watch the game yesterday and when Russell Martin hit that ball, I was like "Heeeeeeere we go" crap. Then I witnessed the worst baserunning I have ever seen in my life, and I couldnt be more thankful for it.
